Tesla MCU2 — overview, specs, differences & faults
The system
MCU2 uses an Intel Atom (Apollo Lake) with 64 GB eMMC. It’s considerably faster; features like a modern browser, better Wi-Fi/BT and (with proper HW) Dashcam/Sentry become available.
Specifications (summary)
- CPU: Intel Atom (Apollo Lake)
- Storage: 64 GB eMMC
- Models: Model 3 from 2017; S/X from ~March 2018
Differences vs. previous generation
- Significantly faster than MCU1
- New visualisations and features (model dependent)
- Improved networking (incl. 5 GHz Wi-Fi)
Common faults & our solution
- Storage/aging: sporadic errors, boot loops. We check storage, power and thermals and repair accordingly.
- Modem/antenna: we trace dropouts down to component level.
Upgrades and retrofit
Retrofit MCU1 → MCU2 is often worthwhile. We validate compatibility and handle dealer-level coding/calibration.
